On the outskirts of Rotterdam, a new green urban residential development is being developed, Park Zestienhoven. It is a green area in a strategic location, well connected and close to the city. Centrally located, a compact facility centre is to be realized. The heart of the neighbourhood is a relaxed and small ensemble, where local residents can relax, play and meet. It reflects the qualities of a green and sustainable outdoor area, which the 16HVN Park is. The ensemble consists of a community school and a housing complex. These two buildings together form a block, and have a combined architectural appearance. The urban block is integrated into the urban tissue, while simultaneously having its own identity.

The location is triangular in shape, and the distance to the adjacent environment is such that the relationship within the block, is more important than with the opposite buildings. The block is therefore designed as a self-contained unit, enhanced with higher volumes at the corner points. Vaulted terraces on the south side give the block a characteristic silhouette and soften the volume. The angles at the entrances and in the school are softened so that a smooth block occurs. At the corners along the main street, the two higher volumes accentuate the entrance to the borough.

Within and around the block are a sequence of courtyards, gardens, playgrounds and roof gardens. This creates a palette of greens and gardens in the block. The placement of the different functions creates synergy and reinforces the feeling of a garden city. The design offers a pleasant environment, where adults and children can and want to live, learn and relax. An urban ensemble in which quality is paramount, and where the various functions are optimally brought together. The goal is an ensemble with a soul. A sustainable and future-oriented development, which residents, users and visitors can identify with and be proud of.
