HET TOLHUIS
CONVERSION AND EXTENSION OF A TOLL HOUSE IN ZALTBOMMEL
  >>>>>>PROJECT UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The design for the Toll House provides an extension of the living area, in order to accommodate the daily life and work functions of its inhabitants.
Over the past decades, several building extensions were added to the Toll House, embedding it into a messy structure of various building volumes and garden walls.
In the design proposal, the superfluous elements are demolished and the essential building components are added together in one walled volume. The Toll House regains its original expressive character. A meandering wall of glued brick connects all the building parts, thus forming an expressive ensemble. A corridor to the street side connecting all spaces of the house forms a spine through the building, as well as providing a buffer against traffic noise. From this corridor, all the rooms of the house are accessible. Several half-climate rooms of the house can be closed, so the house has another use during summer and winter. The rainwater is falling as a cascade in a pond in the interior of the house. The rainwater is used for the gray water circuit and serves also as a decorative element in the house.
